In 2016, CMS overhauled the Requirements of Participation (RoP) for Long- Term Care Facilities, which was implemented in three phases: Phase 1- November of 2016, Phase 2 - November of 2017, and Phase 3 – November 28, 2019. The pandemic hit our industry before Phase 3 could be fully implemented as planned. We were faced with challenges that have never been experienced before, and much of the survey process was placed on “temporary hold,” while everyone (including CMS) tried to figure out how to respond.
During this time, CMS decided to revise surveyor guidance to enhance quality and oversight in certain areas, such as abuse and neglect, admission, transfer, and discharge, and improving care for individuals with mental health or substance use disorder needs. Guidance was added to incorporate the use of Payroll Based Journal staffing data submitted by providers to help inform surveyors of potential staffing concerns. Revisions also were made to clarify expectations for ensuring visitation can occur while preventing community- associated infection or the spread of communicable disease; as well as to assist in the investigation of situations where practitioners or facilities may have inaccurately diagnosed and/or coded a resident with schizophrenia. Additional clarifications were incorporated into the regulatory groups of Quality of Life and Quality of Care, Food and Nutrition Services, and Physical Environment. Surveyors began using the new guidance to determine compliance on October 24, 2022.
We are happy to inform you that we will be offering a 12-hour seminar on the new CMS Surveyor Guidance. Last year’s virtual seminar was so successful, that numerous facilities requested we keep making those type of continuing education opportunities available. Due to staffing issues and costs, facilities found that more of their professionals could attend a virtual training more easily, as opposed to an “in-person” training. Most of you have heard Cat present before, so you already know the material will be presented in an accurate, common-sense, practical and entertaining way. You probably also know that the sessions will not be boring... If you want all the new revisions explained in an easily understood manner, and want to know what the survey focus will be this year, don’t miss this opportunity!!
Since this course will be conducted virtually, online, we are able to offer a special discounted price for Facility registrations. (See registration form.) Take advantage now!
